Don’t Neglect Your Finished Basement When Selling!

Finished basements are coveted bonus space when selling…..if you take the time to prepare them for the market. Basements serve as a play room for kids, an office or extra TV room. Many buyers want that extra square footage so they can keep their living and family room clutter free.

This is a before/after of a recently staged basement by Morris County, NJ’s Elite Staging and Redesign. Ask yourself which basement would appeal to you if you were a buyer…

  1. Store or discard anything that is lying around. Keep it clutter free while on the market.
  2. Add some mirrors to open the space. I found this large horizontal mirror for only $49.00 at HomeGoods.
  3. Give it a purpose. Show, don’t tell how your basement can be used by staging it as a TV, game room or play room.
  4. Make sure you have adequate lighting. Basements are dark, so it’s important to have extra lighting (over head and in the corners).
  5. Usually I don’t endorse air fresheners, BUT Fabreeze is a great product because it doesn’t cover odors, it neutralizes them. You don’t want a musty smell – it’s an instant turnoff.
  6. I may be stating the obvious, but sellers get so caught up in preparing the rest of the house, they don’t always take the time to clean. Vacuum, dust, polish furniture.
  7. Buy some new, inexpensive accent pillows to liven and update the room. A little goes a long way. Shop Target, Walmart, HomeGoods for great deals!
  8. Go for a minimalist look. More is less, and you want to showcase the room, not the accessories.
